As someone who works from home, I’ve had to get creative to keep my dog entertained and safe while I focus on my tasks. At first, it was a bit of a struggle to find a balance between productivity and giving my pet the attention he craved. Over time, I’ve learned a few tricks that help keep him busy and ensure he’s safe while I’m working.
One of the first things I did was create a designated “pet zone” in my home, a comfortable area where my dog could stay while I worked. This space has a cozy bed, his toys, and a view of the window so he can watch the world go by. I found that having a defined spot made him feel secure and gave me peace of mind, knowing he wasn’t getting into anything he shouldn’t.

To keep him busy, I’ve incorporated a few interactive toys into his daily routine. Puzzle feeders and treat-dispensing toys have been game-changers. I’ll fill them with treats or kibble, and it keeps him occupied for quite a while. It’s like a fun challenge for him, and it gives me a much-needed break from having to entertain him. I also rotate his toys to keep things fresh and exciting for him. The more mental stimulation I can provide, the less likely he is to get bored or anxious.
I’ve also found that short breaks throughout the day work wonders. I’ll take a quick 5-minute walk or engage in a brief play session. It gives both of us a mental reset and ensures that my dog is getting the physical activity he needs. Even when I’m busy, taking a few minutes here and there for a quick game of fetch or tug-of-war can make a big difference in his energy levels and mood.

Safety is always my top priority. I make sure that all the doors and windows are securely closed, and I keep any harmful items like cleaning supplies or small objects out of his reach. While I work, I’m constantly aware of his behavior, checking in on him every so often to make sure he’s comfortable and safe.
By creating a safe and engaging environment, I’ve been able to focus on my work without feeling guilty or worrying about my dog. It’s been a win-win situation, and I think it’s the key to keeping both of us happy during long workdays.
